Session Description:
The vadose zone (VZ) connects the Earth’s surface to groundwater, and consequently a wide range of critically-important environmental hydrologic phenomena occur in the VZ. Understanding the complexity and non-linearity of these processes still represents a major challenge, due to (i) the very large heterogeneity of the unsaturated medium in terms of both physical processes (coexistence of several gas and liquid phases, capillary effects, preferential flows) and chemical/biological environments, (ii) difficulties associated with characterization and/or monitoring, and (iii) the transient nature of the natural forcings applied to the VZ. We solicit posters addressing recent advances on dynamic hydrologic and (bio)geochemical VZ processes. Topics include, but are not limited to, unsaturated and multiphase flow and transport, effects of heterogeneity such as preferential flow, climate change-induced VZ processes, measurement and monitoring techniques, and alternatives/limitations to conventional continuum-scale models. Posters describing studies based on laboratory work, field investigations, or computational simulations, are all welcome.
