Scientific and Practical Challenges of Replacing NAD 83, NAVD 88, and IGLD 85 I Posters

Session Description:
In 2022, all datums of the United States, collectively referred to as the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS), will be replaced with modern one(s) that are continental in scope. However, significant scientific and practical challenges remain unresolved. Papers are invited that address some of these issues, including (1) defining a geocentric reference system fixed to a moving and deforming continent, (2) defining a geoid-based, continental-wide vertical datum, (3) implementing time dependencies including geoid change, (4) creating accurate transformations, (5) defining the role of private RTK networks, (6) determining dynamic heights, (7) building geospatial databases capable of handling historic static data along with modern time-dependent data, and (8) collaborations with neighboring countries to ensure compatible and seamless reference systems across the continent. Overhauling the NSRS in the U.S. and those of neighboring countries requires a comprehensive approach to resolving these and related issues over the next 6 years.
