Session ID#: 12914

Session Description:
Difficulty in characterizing aquifer systems has traditionally limited groundwater studies to subregional spatial scales, while quantifying hydrogeologic processes on larger scales still requires shockingly simplifying assumptions. As cloud computing, smart sensors, remote sensing, and big data capture become increasingly available, there is opportunity to enhance our understanding of complex groundwater dynamics over larger spatial scales. These technological advancements are coinciding with a greater emphasis on managing and monitoring aquifer systems, from localized groundwater-surface water interactions and recharge estimation to aquifer-wide sustainability targets.

This session will focus on novel methods to integrate diverse data sources and techniques to better quantify aquifer dynamics over regional spatial scales. We seek studies that integrate a combination of in situ observations (including from smart sensors and citizen science), modeling approaches, and remote sensing to characterize the fluxes and stocks of groundwater, ultimately capable of providing decision-support capacity to better manage groundwater systems.
