Session Description:
This session focuses on recent advances in our fundamental understanding of the physicochemical processes affecting the fate, transport, and remediation of subsurface contaminants. These coupled, non-linear processes may span the hydrogeologic, geochemical, radiological, and microbiological domains and include contaminants and/or remediants ranging from organics, metals, radionuclides, and pathogens to nanoparticles and other emerging contaminants. Theoretical, laboratory, field-scale, and modeling studies that further our understanding of these processes or new remedial applications/approaches used to quantify and enhance remediation performance or develop closure strategies are appropriate for this session. Presentations that leverage the synergy of multiple approaches are especially welcome. This session intends to support broad interaction across the hydrogeology community and straddle the science/engineering interface. Participation bridging traditional research areas, including (but not limited to) groundwater, vadose-zone, groundwater-surface water interface, biology, chemistry, soil- physics, and remediation engineering is encouraged.
