Session Description:
Increasingly more complex structures and dynamics of Earth's lower mantle and core have been implied by recent seismological observations and geodynamic simulations. Interpretations of the observations and tests of the models rely heavily on improved knowledge of relevant material properties under deep Earth conditions. This session focuses on advances in both experimental and theoretical/computational mineral physics on the physics and chemistry of the silicate mantle and metallic core. Subjects to be covered include phase relations and thermodynamic properties, elasticity and equations of state, crystal chemistry, transport and rheological properties, and chemical reactions of mantle and core materials. We also welcome contributions from seismology, geodynamics, and geochemistry to provide a unified view of Earth’s deep interior that could guide future mineral physics research.
