Session ID#: 12946

Session Description:
Long-term drought, changes in climate, and significant shifts in anthropogenic water demands are leading to unprecedented pressures on groundwater resources. Improved groundwater management strategies, and understanding of the quality, quantity and timing of groundwater recharge and river baseflow are essential to ameliorate water-scarcity, particularly in climates with highly seasonal rainfall, or during periods of prolonged drought. This session examines drought impacts on groundwater resources, regional and state policy responses to drought, and the measurement, modeling, and management of groundwater, groundwater recharge, and baseflow resources. We invite studies that: Showcase innovative approaches to groundwater basin assessment, and baseflow and recharge characterization; Analyze policy responses, management measures and practices, and drought recovery and resilience; Define operational sustainability criteria for groundwater basins; and review roles of data collection, monitoring, and modeling/assessment. Studies that span multiple approaches, identify and classify distinct phenomena, or address evidence-based water resource management are particularly welcomed.
