Session Description:
Although earthquake intensity data were largely supplanted by the advent of instrumental seismology, the development of Web- and Smart-Phone-based systems to collect and interpret unprecedented volumes of intensity data generates opportunities to explore the distribution of ground motions with far better spatial sampling than would be possible with even low-cost instrumentation.  Earthquakes such as the 2015 Gorkha, Nepal, earthquake, moreover demonstrate the critical importance of uniformly interpreted traditional intensity data sets in places where instrumental coverage is limited and Web-based intensity tools have limitations.  This session will focus on key aspects of macroseismic data, including recently developed tools to collect, visualize, and analyze intensity data; interpretation of intensity data in terms of quantitative ground motion measures; and case studies demonstrating the use of macroseismic data in well- as well as poorly-instrumented regions to contribute to our understanding of seismotectonics, fundamental earthquake processes, and seismic hazard.
