Determining Matured Science: Utility, Cases, and Formats

Session Description:
Scientific progress is characterized by new knowledge claims, and by overturning and defending old results. What begins as a multitude of supporting or competing claims undergoes a process of weeding out, with premature or false claims identified. During this process, “mature” science emerges: an integral understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of current research, the foundations on which this research is based, and how this research best can be used when dealing with real-world issues.
Here, we focus on the process of knowledge maturation through Climate Science: to clarify a more efficient means for promoting scientific progress and to better support stakeholders confronted with allegedly “best” results and post-normal situations; when scientific results are valued more for their societal implications and less for their scientific clarity or the logic of their methodology.
How can we best achieve, document, and utilize mature science for research, decision-making, management, and science planning?
