Session Description:
Metamorphic core complexes and gneiss domes are common in orogenic belts and rifts, world-wide. Although there is consensus that they play a fundamental role in extension and exhumation of lithosphere, and in the transfer of heat, the physical variables controlling their origin and evolution remain enigmatic and controversial, as does the linked evolution of their bounding normal-sense detachment faults. What controls the diverse range of characteristics of core complexes and gneiss domes in continental and oceanic settings? For example, does the presence or absence of magmatic heat transfer play a key role? This session focuses on synthesizing our growing knowledge of physical and rheological processes in core complexes to understand how these control the evolution of their structurally bounding detachment faults and shear zones. We welcome contributions in all fields, including structural geology, metamorphic petrology, thermochronology, neotectonics, marine geology and geophysics, experimental deformation, geodynamic modeling, seismology, and geodesy.
