Session Description:
Paleomagnetism, satellite measurements, and planetary dynamo models provide insight into the understanding of the interior structures and thermal evolution of solar system bodies. At least seven bodies in the solar system have active dynamos. Mars, the Moon, Mercury and the Earth had ancient dynamo fields. A number of planetesimals are thought to have generated magnetic fields in their early history. Conversely, many other bodies do not have active dynamos and some meteorites are unmagnetized. Some meteorites likely record early fields associated with the protoplanetary disk or Sun. Induced magnetism is also being used to probe planetary interiors.  This session calls for contributions relating to three aspects of magnetism on planets, their moons, and solar system small bodies: 1) Paleomagnetism and rock magnetism of meteorites, returned samples, and their analogs; 2) Spacecraft measurements of dynamo fields, crustal magnetism, and magnetic induction; 3) Developments in dynamo theory from experiments to numerical simulations.
