Session Description:
Fluvial suspended sediment commonly displays non-stationary behaviors, whereby the relationship between sediment and water discharge changes over time.  Changes in sediment regimes are caused by processes governing the delivery and routing of water and sediment to and through the channelized network. Despite the importance of suspended sediments as keystones of water quality, biogeochemical cycling and geomorphic evolution, difficulties exist in understanding the dominant processes and controls of these dynamics.

This session solicits abstracts on research providing new insights into the processes and controls that contribute to non-stationary suspended sediment dynamics in hydrological systems. Studies addressing the causality of non-stationary sediment dynamics are welcome across a wide range of time scales – from rainfall-runoff event hysteresis to millennial scale trends – and across a wide range of experimental designs including plot- to watershed-scale field monitoring, data-driven analyses and synthesis, laboratory experiments, and numerical modeling efforts.
