Session Description:
This session focuses on quantifying the current and potential climate change mitigation impacts of wood-use and forest management at landscape and national scales. The sustainable use of forest biomass for bioenergy presents an opportunity to address climate change by reducing fossil fuel emissions. Changing practices in forest management, wood-use, and post-consumer wood products can result in higher or lower emissions to the atmosphere depending on biological and utilization efficiencies. Wood-use strategies for mitigation can include using wood energy to avoid fossil fuels, or shifting commodities to longer-lived end-use products, or using wood to substitute for cement or other products. Forest management examples can include adjusting rotation ages, reducing logging wastes, eliminating on-site residue burning, or increasing growth. Submissions should consider a systems approach, where changes in forest ecosystem, harvested wood products and displacement components are included.
