Session Description:
Much of the progress in our understanding of Earth’s deep interior in the last 3 decades has been enabled by a handful of big ideas, both conceptual and related to infrastructure development. These include: investigating the long-wavelength structure of the mantle and linking it to mantle dynamics; systematically characterizing earthquakes around the globe through moment tensor analysis; and, creating reference seismological models of Earth structure for use in mineral physics and geodynamics. Additionally, these big ideas centered on creating systems for acquiring and openly distributing globally relevant high-quality data, establishing a culture of data sharing, and educating the next generation of interdisciplinary scientists. We invite submissions from across disciplines that: 1. address new insights into large scale deep Earth structure and processes; 2. identify limitations of, suggest improvements to, and/or propose the next generation of approaches, observations, and systems that will inform global deep Earth studies over the coming decades.
