Session Description:
Studies that forecast the likely impacts of climate change on human well-being regularly employ an assumption that individuals and society will continue to function as they have in the recent past. However -- due in part to the lack of standard methodological approaches -- many impact studies omit investigation and integration of historical adaptation to climatic stressors, even when their data may enable insight into such adaptation. Because humans can smooth the effects of short and long-run climatic stressors, such omission can produce inaccurate estimates of likely future climate impacts. In this session we focus on empirical research at the intersection of the social and environmental sciences that employs integrated socio-spatial, high resolution data to: (i) quantitatively estimate historical adaptation responses and/or (ii) develop strategies for integrating empirical adaptation estimates into quantitative climate impact assessments.
