Session Description:
Plants regulate the earth’s elemental cycles and support mankind. Roots constitute a significant portion of the plant biomass to provide functions of anchorage and resource uptake. Optimization of these functions evolved across all plant species as root morphologies that reflect the adaption strategy to different environments. Hence, roots are major drivers of plant health and productivity. While important, roots are difficult to study due to the opacity, heterogeneity and limited accessibility of the soil. As a result, our understanding of below ground roots and their interactions with the soil are significantly lagging behind the understanding of above ground plant processes. We invite abstracts focusing on the characterization and imaging of plant roots and root – soil interactions. Advances in the laboratory, field and numerical simulations are welcomed. Specifically, we encourage submission of novel advances in in-situ and non-destructive root imaging technologies at both lab and field scales.
