B31C:
Changing Biogeochemistry of Urban Rivers and Current Mitigation Efforts Posters

Submit an Abstract to this Session Please know the abstract submission deadline has passed. There are no exceptions to this deadline and no new abstracts can be submitted.

Session ID#: 13093

Session Description:
Human populations are increasingly concentrated in urban areas and by 2050, 70% of the world's population will be urban (UN-Habitat).  Urban water resources risk being increasingly degraded as the population grows and impervious surfaces, combined-flow sewers and non-point source contaminants rise.  Changes range from discharge of potential carcinogens to chronically elevated sodium and calcium, potentially creating osmotic stress for river organisms.   However, there is burgeoning interest in reclaiming urban waterways, reducing what has been termed "urban stream syndrome".   In this session, we welcome submissions focusing on both the changing biogeochemistry of urban streams and rivers as well as efforts to reduce adverse impacts on these systems.
