Session Description:
Climate change affects snow, water, vegetation, ice and permafrost within the Arctic domain, and modifies atmospheric, oceanic, and terrestrial freshwater system. The Arctic freshwater system links with remote regions, affecting climate regionally and globally. Arctic research has very significantly progressed in recent years. A critical need is to synthesize scientific knowledge about the present status, processes, trends, and future consequences of changes in the freshwater system. This session focusses on regimes and changes of Arctic freshwater source, flux and storage components and related processes . Scientific interests of this session include atmospheric and river transport, precipitation–evaporation–discharge cycle, permafrost/ground ice and soil moisture regime, lake and wetland, river and sea ice, and ecological and socio-economic effects propagated by freshwater change. Also of interest are the interaction between river discharge and coastal sea ice and remote influences on Arctic freshwater system, including advanced application of remote sensing and numerical model assessments.
