Session ID#: 13119
Session Description:
Surface mass balance (SMB) processes, such as snowfall, blowing snow sublimation and redistribution, snow and ice albedo evolution, and meltwater production and its routing and retention, are key to understanding changes occurring over ice sheets, glaciers, sea ice, and seasonal snow cover. Several of these processes initiate a positive feedback that can magnify their impact. For example, surface melt not only affects albedo, but also aids in the rapid disintegration of sea ice and ice shelves, the latter of which are major stabilizing features around Antarctica. Field measurements have led to new discoveries, such as Greenland's firn aquifer, and modeling work has provided insight into the mechanisms controlling its formation. This session seeks contributions from across the cryosphere on SMB and its components, including new observational techniques and modelling efforts as well as remaining challenges in both, and their role in observed change.
