Cloud-Aerosol-Precipitation-Climate Interactions over the Southeastern Atlantic II Posters

Session Description:
The southeastern Atlantic (SEA) low cloud deck reflects solar radiation and cools the upper ocean, which helps set the Tropical atmospheric circulation. Low clouds and their climate feedbacks are challenging to simulate. The SEA low cloud deck is unique in being overlain by optically thick biomass burning aerosol layers transported from Southern Africa from July-October. Low clouds are susceptible to this aerosol in ways that include radiative impacts on sea-surface temperature, impacts of aerosol absorption on atmospheric heating and relative humidity, and microphysical interactions. The combined impacts on future climate are poorly understood.


Studies are solicited that present new research focused on observation and modeling of the interactions between clouds, aerosol, precipitation and climate over the SEA and other extensive low cloud regions. These include new remote sensing methods to improve our ability to observe aerosols, clouds and mixed scenes, analysis of field experiment data, and process and regional modeling.
