Session Description:
A relation exists between seismicity and gravity field in terms of masses which affect earthquake rupture propagation and mass redistribution during large earthquakes. Using terrestrial and high resolution satellite data, stationary anomalies and temporal changes of the gravity field can be observed. The stationary anomalies correlate in areas of large moment release with extreme values of gravity anomalies. Temporal changes, instead, are the results of Earth surface and volume changes caused by co-seismic and post-seismic deformations. Both types of observations disclose new insight in earthquake rupture processes. The identification of stationary features which persist through various seismic cycles would be a remarkable contribution to hazard and risk assessment. Observed gravity changes can be used to obtain independently determined seismic source parameters similar to those from the centroid-moment-tensor analysis. Transient gravity perturbations can improve our understanding of the seismic cycle and would have an essential influence on earthquake early warning.
