Session Description:
Throughout the world, frozen features are changing, with significant impacts on the surrounding ecosystem, environment, and society. Surface and airborne geophysical methods are increasingly used to monitor changes because of the strong contrasts in geophyscial properties that exist between frozen and thawed soil, and between solid-ice features and liquid water. Geophysical methods offer insight into groundwater flow and surface-soil/groundwater exchange dynamics in permafrost regions, landscape-scale changes post-fire, and geotechnical challenges in cold-region environments. This session is open to ground or airborne geophysical studies that focus on objectives including the delineation and characterization of ground ice or permafrost soil, evaluating sub- and suprapermafrost flow, and the monitoring of freeze-thaw dynamics. The session will consider seismic, resistivity, ground-penetrating radar, gravity, magnetics, and other electromagnetic studies over a variety of spatial scales. We also encourage the submission of multidisciplinary projects that incorporate the impacts of frozen material change on cold-regions ecology and biochemistry.
