Session Description:
Importance of connections between land and associated freshwaters are becoming more apparent for understanding the dynamics of carbon in inland waters. Rates of lateral transport determine timescales of loading, remineralization, mobilization and release of climate forcing gases. Definition of the physical and biological controls on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions enables scaling for regional or global carbon budgets. Timeseries measurements of concentrations and fluxes of GHGs coupled with meteorology and physical limnology illustrate the importance of physical controls such as stratification, heat, momentum flux, and mixing dynamics. Modeling and analytical capacities are keeping pace. New tools and approaches have enabled seasonal, regional, and longer term measurements and analyses. These allow results to be placed in the context of variability within the climate system. Presentations are invited which examine linkages between measurements of GHGs and the physical hydrodynamics that define the variability of fluxes with surface waters at local to regional scales.
