Session Description:
Despite the large volume of observational data in the magnetosphere, solar atmosphere and heliosphere, these fields are still “data-starved” due to severe data scarcity. Advances in observational and data mining techniques allow extracting information from data that can help drive, constrain, assimilate, or be otherwise combined with models. The latter, in turn, are reaching the level of sophistication at which they can help interpret observations and fill data gaps. This session solicits abstracts presenting methods and results of investigations that build upon the synergy between data sets and sophisticated physics-based or empirical models. Presentations developing or applying methods of data assimilation, novel validation techniques, e.g., via pattern recognition, and other means of data-model fusion are solicited. The common forum provided by this session will help address the pressing need for exchange of expertise among the aforementioned heliophysical disciplines currently striving to develop such methods.
