Session Description:
This session will explore multi-disciplinary approaches to salinity and underground injection control mapping, both inside and outside of oil and gas fields. Oil field processes, such as hydraulic fracturing, wastewater injection, and enhanced oil recovery, involve the injection of fluids into porous and permeable rock. The Safe Drinking Water Act requires these injections to occur in exempt hydrocarbon-bearing reservoirs or in aquifers with saline water containing over 10,000 ppm total dissolved solids. Determining the geometry, geochemistry, and salinity of water in the subsurface can be difficult. Direct geochemical sampling provides the most reliable data; however, it is often spatially and temporally limited. Instead, indirect measurements using electric logs or other geophysical techniques are often used.
We aim to discuss the diverse set of methods that can be used to evaluate the hydrogeology and geochemistry of these aquifers and the evolution of aquifer geochemistry due to injection processes.
