Session Description:
Understanding of sea level variability and change requires quantification of the contributions from all relevant climate processes and identification of their natural or anthropogenic causes. Such knowledge is crucial for development of projections and forecasts useful for impact and risk analyses, as well for understanding the Earth's energy imbalance and hydrological cycle. This session seeks modeling and data analyses that address causes of sea level variability and change on timescales of months to centuries, at the local, regional and global levels. Topics of interest include the mass and steric contributions to sea level budgets and respective uncertainties, the differences between coastal and large-scale sea level variability, the importance of climate modes and internal variability in general for sea level, and the attribution of regional sea level change to natural and anthropogenic radiative forcing agents. Studies that advance the science of regional sea level forecasts and projections are also of interest.
