Session Description:
Hydrological model evaluations remain focused on comparing simulations to time series representing a spatially aggregated catchment scale observation in the form of river discharge, with the conviction that it provides some inherent insight into the internal hydrological behavior of the river basin. As a consequence, most parameterization and calibration schemes are designed to optimize the performance of the temporal dynamics and biases in model simulations, while ignoring the simulated spatial pattern. Therefore, a paradigm shift it required, moving away from the aggregated evaluation of hydrological models towards a spatially distributed approach. However, hydrological model evaluation and calibration lack methodologies for incorporating spatial pattern information.

This session focuses on advances in monitoring and modeling of spatial patterns in hydrology across a range of scales. Special attention is given to the progress made within spatial model evaluation and calibration. Specifically, the ability of models to reproduce observed spatial patterns will be targeted.
