Session Description:
Many regions globally, including the eastern U.S., have experienced significant changes in atmospheric deposition; however the responses in streamwater chemistry have varied. For example, soil properties differ from glaciated and unglaciated regions, where glaciated soils may be less-aged with lower clay content than unglaciated soils. Glaciated soils have less capacity to retain sulfate therefore response to input flux appears to be more rapid. Other biogeochemical factors that may influence watershed retention of atmospheric deposition are vegetation cover, annual temperature ranges, soil carbon and nitrogen content, and acid-base status. In the Southeast United States, stream export of sulfate has remained unchanged, where as in the Northeast declines have been measured. This session will highlight research that advances our understanding of the biogeochemical processes controlling stream chemistry in watersheds impacted by decades of atmospheric deposition, including sulfur, nitrogen and mercury.
