Session Description:
The annual snowpack plays an important role in the Earth system as processes on this medium feedback to the surface energy balance and atmospheric composition. Papers applying novel technologies, modeling, or remote sensing to snow and firn observations or evaluating the coupling of snowpack processes and climate are welcomed. These processes are governed by thermodynamic and mechanical processes including: wind redistribution and interactions, metamorphism, densification, ablation, and sublimation. Atmospheric interaction with the snowpack plays a large role in the magnitude of the process as well as the feedback to climate. This session focuses on field, laboratory, and modeling work on snow and firn processes in polar and alpine environments. We invite abstracts on these processes, including those which exert an influence on chemistry, climate, photochemistry, metamorphism, and physical and radiative properties.
