Session Description:
Mass transport occurs and is recorded over a variety of length and time scales in virtual all geological settings, in particular at elevated temperatures. It may take place, in part, by melt and fluid advection, chemical diffusion, and brittle and ductile deformation. This session explores the mechanisms and rates of all forms of mass transport that may operate during orogenic processes on Earth and other planetary bodies. We seek contributions that utilize a variety of methodological approaches to the study of the kinetics of mass transport during orogenesis, such as geochemical, structural and tectonic analysis, numerical and analogue modelling, experiments, geodesy, and more. This session will address key questions associated with the study of mass transport in orogenic systems: what transport processes operate at different length and time scales; how can we quantify these; and to what extent are chemical and mechanical mass transport processes coupled?
