Session Description:
Plate tectonic and magmatic processes shuttle materials between Earth’s deep interior, lithosphere, and surface environment. Elements crucial to life and mediating long-term climate (e.g., H, C, N, O, P and S) are sequestered into discrete reservoirs such as the atmosphere+ocean, crust, mantle, and core over geologic time, resulting in a habitable surface environment. Understanding how these elements are cycled by magmatic and tectonic processes is therefore crucial for examining how each of these reservoirs have changed though time. Important outstanding questions relate to how geochemical cycles operate and interface with each other at local or global scales, how to quantify the size of reservoirs and the magnitude of fluxes between them, and how elemental cycles are tied to tectonic–magmatic cycles.

We invite contributions from field, laboratory, and theoretical studies that examine how tectonic and magmatic processes transport elements between Earth’s various reservoirs and their influences on climate and the biosphere.
