Session Description:
Fog and low stratus (FLS) clouds are climatologically significant in many regions, including the coastal margin of the eastern Pacific, and impact the hydrology, chemistry, and thermodynamic balance of ecosystems and urban environments.  FLS formation and evolution is driven by a complex interplay of topography, synoptic and mesoscale meteorological conditions, aerosol-cloud interactions and underlying land and/or water surface characteristics, such as temperature, currents, and sea spray composition.  Understanding FLS, the biotic response, and impacts thus requires a diverse array of measurements and models that link processes at multiple spatial and temporal scales. Seasonal FLS projections and assessment of vulnerability of marine environment FLS to climate change are critical for coastal adaptation planning. We seek presentations on physical, chemical, biological, and anthropogenic processes that drive and are influenced by coastal or non-coastal fog using any of the following: process models; ground-based, airborne, or satellite observations; manipulative experiments; or other analysis.
