Session Description:
Particle distributions in the terrestrial and planetary magnetospheres deviate from the classical Maxwellian forms, and are typically described by the velocity/energy kappa distributions. These distributions have become increasingly widespread in magnetospheric plasma physics, while a breakthrough in the field came with their connection with non-extensive statistical physics, a generalization of the classical Maxwell-Boltzmann statistical theory. The origin of magnetospheric kappa distributions is attributed to various particle acceleration and plasma transport processes, e.g., magnetic reconnection, dipolarizations and substorm injections, ionospheric outflow, shock acceleration, turbulent transport, and mixture of hot-cold plasmas. Kappa distributions have also important effect on magnetospheric plasma waves and instabilities, properties and features (e.g., field-aligned conductance, inverted-V events, sounder stimulated resonances), and interplay of particle sources (e.g., solar wind, volcanic moons) and sinks (e.g., collisions, moon/ring surfaces). We welcome abstracts reporting on the progress of the origin of magnetospheric kappa distributions and their effect on corresponding plasma processes.
