Session Description:
The eruptive histories of many volcanic regions in the world are poorly constrained. The source volcanoes of some of the largest events in the past two millennia are still unknown. Filling these gaps in knowledge is essential for a better evaluation of volcanic hazards. Volcanic ash can travel far and forms well-preserved tephra layers in quiet, low-energy sedimentary environments. Coring such deposits provides continuous, high temporal resolution records that can be mined with detailed microscopic, geochemical and geochronological investigations. Tephrochronology has the potential to expand our knowledge on the number, timing and magnitude of eruptions that affected a given location. We invite contributions that use tephrostratigraphy as a tool to reconstruct the eruptive history of a volcanic province. We especially welcome ideas on how to identify source volcanoes, distinguish between multiple eruptions from the same source, distinguish primary from secondary reworked tephra, and accurately constrain the age of tephra layers.
