Session Description:
High-impact weather and climate extreme events occur over a wide range of temporal and spatial scales and have significant societal impacts. The strong 2015-16 El Niño, interacting with other global anomalies, has had a profound influence on regional extreme events worldwide. This session solicits input from multidisciplinary physical, biological, and social scientists to advance our understanding, forecasting capability, and decision-making related to climate extreme events. We will discuss studies related to this recent El Niño event that focus on the observations and modeling of extreme drought, floods, heat waves and cold surges, anomalously severe storms, marine heat waves, harmful algal blooms, vector-borne diseases, and their societal impacts (e.g., water resources, marine ecosystems, fishery, and human health).
