Session Description:
Most mineralogical transformations are the origin of discontinuities in the Earth’s interior, and influence geochemical cycles while offering our most direct clues to the thermal and chemical state of the deep Earth. This session focuses on the transformations of minerals and assemblages of minerals under the realistic thermochemical and thermodynamical conditions of the deep Earth, the detectability of such transformations through geophysical processes, and dynamical implications. Solid-solid transitions leave a fingerprint on seismic velocities and geodynamic measurements, while melting and fluid release have a remote fingerprint on geochemical fractionation. Elemental and isotopic exchanges happen during both types of transitions. We bring together mineral physicists, petrologists, and dynamicists to address phase relationships of rocks and minerals, including their features from the telluric to the atomic scale. We encourage contributions from geochemists, seismologists and geodynamicists who consider the effect of the mineral phase transitions.
