Session Description:
The allocation of photosynthate among the plant components (e.g., leaves, stems, and roots) plays an important role in regulating plant growth, competition, and the terrestrial ecosystem carbon cycle. Although the importance of carbon (C) allocation is unquestioned, there is far less consensus on how it should be modeled in many terrestrial ecosystem models. This session focuses on understanding how plant alters C allocation in response to environmental changes, such as water, nutrients, light availabilities, elevated atmospheric CO2 and warming, and how those changes of C allocation impact the carbon and water cycles. The session encourages studies that investigate C allocation and environmental changes interactions from various perspectives using observational or modeling approaches, including the physiological and biochemical mechanisms involved. Results from C allocation observation techniques, data analyses and model intercomparison studies are welcome.
