Session Description:
Samples represent a primary foundation of Geoscience research. They are key to our knowledge of Earth’s dynamical systems and evolution, from global climate change and paleoclimate, to present and past biogeochemical cycles, magmatic processes and mantle dynamics, to ground truthing remote sensing measurements. Many sample collections cannot be replaced because they were collected from locations that are no longer accessible (e.g. mines), were ephemeral (e.g. unaltered tephra), or are too expensive to recollect. Moreover, tremendous economy in time and money lies in our ability to layer new types of analyses on top of foundational information that has already been collected. Still, many collections are at risk of being discarded because resources and policies for open access and preservation of samples are lacking. This session aims to raise awareness of the value of scientific collections, threats to their survival, and efforts to improve their access and preservation to increase long-term impact.
