Session Description:
Natural and anthropogenic disturbances stimulate hydrological systems triggering complex non-linear and non-additive interaction, process cascades, and feedbacks between hydrologic, geomorphic, biogeochemical, and ecologic systems. Disturbance hydrology examines how wildfires, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, resource extraction, or other abrupt landscape changes impact hydrological fluxes, soil physical and chemical properties, flow paths, and hillslope or in-stream processes and hence provide important insights for better understanding the hydrologic cycle. While impacts may be spatially and temporally limited, they can induce short- and long-term changes in water partitioning, residence time distributions, and fluxes of solutes and sediments over broad scales. Thus, improved process knowledge of individual and overlapping disturbances is fundamental for better process understanding and for developing robust models, predictions, and land management practices. We welcome submissions from empirical, conceptual, or modeling studies that investigate how disturbances modify hydrological functioning and geomorphic or biogeochemical responses.
