Session Description:
Virtual Research Environments (VRE’s) are increasingly used to support collaborative computing environments using cyberinfrastructure. VRE’s can support a range of research classes, from a diverse group of researchers seamlessly investigating secure or distributed data collections, to highly skilled researchers accessing specialised environments that facilitate complex processing workflows on supercomputers. ]VRE’s are known across Europe as Virtual Research Environments; in Australia as Virtual Laboratories and in the USA as Science Gateways: other terms used include Co-laboratories, Collaborative Interactive Environments and Analytics Platforms/Engines. However, many VRE communities are unaware of other similar activities, and there needs to be greater awareness of these initiatives globally to actively seek collaborative opportunities for developing consistent environments and improving adoption/uptake of successful use-cases. We invite presentations that describe operational discipline level VREs; the technologies used; challenges and solutions; the class of users making best use; the future vision; and any opportunities for global research community engagement.
