Session Description:
Atmospheric phenomena operate across a wide spectrum of scales, ranging from thousands of kilometers to a handful of meters. The ability to model finer scales appropriately has been shown to produce better representations of atmospheric states. While computing power has increased greatly over the past few decades, simulating the global atmosphere at high resolution remains burdensome. However, novel techniques, such as variable-resolution modeling, adaptive mesh refinement, and the multiscale modeling framework, are helping to improve regional representations of the atmosphere in addition to providing more physically realistic interactions between various atmospheric scales. This session seeks contributions regarding the development or application of multi-scale techniques for simulating the atmosphere as well as studies uncovering and addressing sensitivities arising from the response of model physics and dynamics to multiple resolutions. Applications of multiscale models to understand teleconnections across scales, as well as the climate response to anthropogenic forcings, are also encouraged.
