Session Description:
Wildland fire research often targets the immediate effects of wildfire and prescribed fire ash and sediment on stream water. A growing number of studies show that water quality concerns from nutrients, metals, carbon and other constituents can persist for years after fire. Wildfire severity, prescribed fire frequency and recovery time influence forest structure and species composition, soil organic matter quantity and chemical composition and other ecosystem processes that influence water exported from burned watersheds. Presentations in this session will address impacts of prescribed fire, wildfire, post-fire management on stream nutrient dynamics and export, dissolved organic matter and disinfection byproduct precursors, sediment and metals, as well as harmful algal blooms and stream biota. Changing climate is expected to increase the extent of wildland fire in coming decades and this pattern has important implications for sustained drinking water supply and treatment.
