Session Description:
The performance of many subsurface systems and reservoirs strongly depends on fully coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical processes. Deformation, flow and transport mechanisms during reactive transport, initiation and propagation of fractures and swelling/weathering may all affect the integrity of the subsurface system across the multiple spatial (nm vs. km) and temporal (second vs. centuries) scales. To numerically and experimentally capture these multi-scale, multi-physical interplays is challenging. Additionally, there is a significant interest in minimizing uncertainties through advancing characterization and simulation of coupled processes in fractured rocks with complex fracture networks in subsurface resources. This session provides a forum for researchers to exchange ideas on advancing the state-of-the-art of both the numerical modeling and the experimental testing of these coupled processes in fractured geological media and the associated uncertainty. We welcome contributions on innovative laboratory experimental approaches, advanced simulation approaches, novel numerical algorithms to advance current understanding of coupled processes in fractured rocks.
