Session Description:
Ensuring the sustainability of deltas and other low-lying coastal regions in view of sea-level rise depends on an integrated understanding of the geological as well as ecological processes that shape these landforms. Nested with a complex interplay of fluvial-tectono-sedimentary parameters (e.g., channel erosion and avulsion, siltation and aggradation, and subsidence processes such as isostatic responses, sediment compaction, and tectonics along both passive and active margins), feedbacks between coastal geomorphology, hydrology, ecology, and human settlements have large implications for long term delta sustainability.
This session will address the evolution of landforms with respect to sea-level rise over multiple time scales and disciplines by considering geological and socio-ecological processes. Multidisciplinary contributions dealing with both modern and ancient deltas are welcome, and we particularly invite work related to large deltas such as the Kosi, Ganges-Brahmaputra, Yellow, Indus, Mekong, Mississippi, Rhone, Danube, Nile, Orinoco, Niger, and Amazon.
