Session Description:
Geochemical data suggest a complex relationship between biological innovation and the evolution of Earth’s surface environments throughout the Proterozoic—beginning with climatic and geochemical perturbation in the wake of the Paleoproterozoic Great Oxidation Event and culminating with oxygenation, low-latitude glaciation, and the rise of animals in the Neoproterozoic. Even more intriguing is the maintenance of geochemical and climatic stasis during the intervening ‘boring billion’ of the Mesoproterozoic. Our session will explore this critical chapter of Earth’s evolution. We welcome submissions that provide novel constraints on the redox landscape of the Proterozoic ocean-atmosphere system, characterize biospheric oxygenation dynamics on a variety of spatial and temporal scales, and synthesize the spatiotemporal patterns of biological innovation during Proterozoic time. Also relevant are numerical models that explore the role of the marine biosphere in modulating Proterozoic climate, Earth system forcings involved in climatic collapse, and feedback mechanisms responsible for persistent habitability on Earth.
