Session Description:
Research in the Earth and space sciences today needs to address global challenges such as climate variability, effective prediction of natural hazards, sustainable management of the Critical Zone, as well as contributing evidence to debates on sustainable economic development. Multinational collaborations that develop large-scale infrastructures can accelerate such worldwide research objectives, enabling high quality research outcomes more efficiently. The types of infrastructures are varied, including global research collaborations, global sensor networks, international data sharing infrastructures, and virtual research laboratories. Most start out as national networks that coerce to become international networks of networks and ultimately form global infrastructures able to support research objectives across national and continental boundaries. This session will highlight collaborative initiatives that are underway to support research across the Earth and space sciences, showcasing their diversity and drawing attention to achievements and challenges of moving research infrastructures from institutional or national focus into an international sphere.
