Session Description:
Society today is facing unprecedented challenges of food, water and energy security; resilience to natural hazards; impacts of population growth; pandemics of infectious diseases; sustainability of ecosystem services; poverty and the development of a sustainable economy. Climate change represents an overarching and cross-cutting challenge exacerbating these issues.

Earth observations are an indispensable component towards addressing these societal challenges. The Group on Earth Observations (GEO), a global partnership of governments and organizations, envisions a future wherein decisions and actions for the benefits of human kind are informed by coordinated, comprehensive and sustained Earth observations.

This session focuses on development of an interdisciplinary knowledge base that identifies observations needed for all disciplines and is linked to user requirements such as Sustainable Development Goal monitoring frameworks, ultimately ensuring that data and information about the Earth collected through observing systems made available by the GEO community is timely, relevant, and openly discoverable and accessible.
