Session ID#: 13604

Session Description:
Shale and mudstone behavior impact most efforts in subsurface science and engineering, and are a focus of energy surety and security. Hydrocarbon shale plays, long-term storage of CO2, and disposal of nuclear waste spur much research on coupled processes and constitutive behavior of these fine-grained nano-porous rocks. This session invites researchers to interact on aspects of multiphysics of shales with emphasis on multi-scale characterization of heterogeneity, constitutive modeling, and performance assessment. This includes but is not limited to: leakage mitigation and production decline; geomechanical and hydrological characterization of fracture networks and their evolution; chemo-mechanical coupling from reaction and sorption; petrophysical characterization using various microscopy/scattering/diffraction/tomography methods; acoustic/electromagnetic properties and geophysical monitoring; and advanced modeling of coupled processes.
