Session Description:
Forest structure and aboveground biomass (AGB) are required for the measurement, monitoring, and modeling of regional and global carbon cycle dynamics, and consequent effects on climate. Furthermore, monitoring and mitigation strategies implemented at the local level will require spatial and temporal resolution of structure and AGB dynamics at the hectare and few-month level, respectively. Missions capable of these resolutions, using all-weather interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) or its polarimetric variant (PolInSAR), are currently being flown or planned to fly in the next 10 years. This session focuses on the diverse range of radar frequencies that will be used in these missions, from P-band (wavelength, λ=80 cm) to Ka-band (λ=1 cm). Penetration through vegetation, necessary for structure and AGB measurement, is greater at longer wavelengths, while attenuation at shorter wavelengths is somewhat countered by better propagation through holes in the forest medium. The complementary benefits of each frequency will be explored.
