Session Description:
Scientific evidence points to a future where extreme events related to climate change are likely to increase both in frequency and intensity. Despite this well-established fact society is often ill prepared to deal with the consequences of extreme events. This is true for most countries across all income levels. Two main reasons stand out for this. First, extreme events are not fully understood in terms of how climate variables interact with one another. Extremes are often viewed as one dimensional phenomena (temperature, wind, etc.) when in fact they are almost always multidimensional.  Second, collaboration between disciplines in terms of developing research methods to result in improved preparedness for climate related extremes are in a nascent stage.

This session will bring together climate and social scientists that are engaged in collaborative efforts that result in society’s ability to prepare and cope with extreme event occurrence.
