Session Description:
Surface processes in eroding landscapes are influenced by local climate and by feedbacks among bedrock susceptibility to chemical weathering, physical rock properties (including fracture spacing and other spatial heterogeneities), and the history of past conditions.  In this session, we seek to explore how climate and bedrock properties modulate landform responses to environmental forcing and boundary conditions such as tectonic uplift.  Although scientific studies are often designed to intentionally isolate physical and chemical changes in bedrock and the critical zone, interactions among these changes likely influence surface processes. In addition, on Earth the physical and chemical breakdown of rock is often modulated by climate-dependent biota.  This session aims to foster a better understanding of physical and chemical process interactions and their roles in landscape evolution, and to also highlight a range of methodologies that are used to tackle these questions, including field, laboratory and numerical approaches.
